## How they compare

Meta's Model API is young. It opened as a public preview in July 2026, and its Muse Spark line now runs through version 1.3 with a 1M token context at $1.25 in and $4.25 out per million. The same key reaches Muse Image at $0.01 per image and Muse Voice Transcribe at $0.18 per hour of audio, and the endpoint accepts OpenAI Chat Completions and Anthropic Messages formats. Vertex AI is the established counterpart: Gemini 3.8, Claude, Gemma and media models like Imagen, Veo and Chirp, inside Google Cloud's training and governance stack.

Meta's Contributor tier is the wild card. Developers who let Meta train on their prompts and completions pay $0.10 in and $0.20 out, roughly 95% off, but rate limits drop from 3,000 to 100 requests per minute, and most business traffic cannot accept the data terms. Vertex costs more and splits pricing across services, but offers the track record and BigQuery integration a preview API cannot yet show. Prototypes and cost-sensitive coding agents can try Meta cheaply. Production enterprise agents belong on Vertex for now.

## What each one does

### Google Vertex AI

Vertex AI is Google Cloud's enterprise AI platform. At Google Cloud Next on April 22, 2026, Google rebranded it the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform with an agent-first structure, though the API endpoint and most docs still say Vertex. Model Garden offers 200+ models, including Google's Gemini 3.8 family, Anthropic's Claude models and open models like Gemma, alongside Imagen, Veo and Chirp for media and speech. Google's own TPUs sit underneath much of its first-party serving.

### Meta

Meta has moved from open Llama releases toward its own closed API. Meta Superintelligence Labs builds the Muse family, and in July 2026 Meta opened a public preview of the Meta Model API with Muse Spark 1.1, a multimodal reasoning model aimed at agentic coding, tool use and computer use. The current lineup runs through Muse Spark 1.3 with a 1M token context. Standard pricing is $1.25 in and $4.25 out per million tokens, with cached input at $0.15, and the endpoint speaks OpenAI Chat Completions, Anthropic Messages and a stateful agentic format.

## Which is best, and when

### Choose Google Vertex AI for

- Production agents that need an established enterprise platform
- Gemini video and multimodal work
- Training and governance on Google Cloud

### Choose Meta for

- Cheap prototyping on the Contributor tier when data sharing is fine
- Cost-sensitive coding agents on Muse Spark
- Image generation and transcription on the same key
