## How they compare

Mistral's lineup runs from Small 4 at $0.15 in and $0.60 out to Medium 3.5 at $1.50 in and $7.50 out, all with 256K context, plus Codestral for fill-in-the-middle completion. Most weights are open, and EU or US regional endpoints suit data residency rules. Inception's Mercury 2.5 is a closed reasoning model with tool use and 260K context at $0.20 in and $0.75 out. Inception reports 1,100+ tokens per second; Artificial Analysis measures about 640.

Both sell through Azure and Bedrock. Mistral fits teams that want open weights, self-hosting, in-region processing or agentic coding on Medium 3.5. Inception fits latency-critical work like autocomplete, edits and voice, where speed matters more than peak quality.

## What each one does

### Mistral AI

Mistral AI is a Paris lab that sells its models through La Plateforme, its own API, and releases most of them as open weights. It consolidated the lineup in 2026. Mistral Medium 3.5, released April 28, is a dense 128B model that merges instruction following, reasoning and coding into one set of weights, and it replaced both Devstral 2 and the Magistral reasoning models. It costs $1.50 in and $7.50 out per million tokens and scores 77.6% on SWE-Bench Verified by Mistral's count. Mistral Small 4, a 119B mixture-of-experts model with 6.5B active, costs $0.15 in and $0.60 out. Mistral Large 3, a 675B MoE under Apache 2.0, runs $0.50 in and $1.50 out. All three carry a 256K context window. Mistral Large 4, a 1.05T multimodal MoE with 52B active, entered public preview on October 6, 2026 with a 1M context at $1.36 in and $4.18 out. Its weights are due at the end of October.

### Inception

Inception builds diffusion large language models (dLLMs). Every other LLM on this list generates text one token at a time; Inception's Mercury models start from a rough draft of a whole block and refine it over a few passes, producing many tokens in parallel. That ties speed less to output length and lets the models run fast on ordinary NVIDIA GPUs rather than custom chips. The company was founded by professors from Stanford, UCLA and Cornell behind core work on diffusion, Flash Attention and DPO, and is led by Stanford's Stefano Ermon. It raised a $50M seed in November 2025 led by Menlo Ventures, with Mayfield, M12, NVentures, Snowflake and Databricks, plus Andrew Ng and Andrej Karpathy as angels.
