Hugging Face Inference Providers vs Boundless: key differences

Hugging Face Inference Providers fronts 17 partners, including Baseten, Fireworks, Groq and Together, with 132 chat models at provider rates and no markup. Suffixes like :cheapest pick the host per request, and automatic selection fails over when a provider goes down. Boundless is not on that partner list, though it does serve models through Vercel AI Gateway. Its own API serves open models such as GLM-5.3 and Kimi K3 with 1M context, resells GPT and Claude, and works with both the OpenAI and Anthropic SDKs.

Hugging Face is the pick for comparing hosts on one model and keeping a single bill across many providers. Boundless fits teams that have settled on a host and want it tuned to their traffic, with uptime, throughput and latency targets in a contract. Going direct also avoids the router's extra hop and rate limits, and Boundless sets spend budgets per API key on prepaid credits.

What Hugging Face Inference Providers and Boundless do

Hugging Face Inference Providers

Inference Providers is a router run by Hugging Face that sits in front of partner inference clouds. The current partner list covers Baseten, Cerebras, Cohere, DeepInfra, fal, Featherless AI, Fireworks, Groq, Novita, Nscale, OVHcloud, Public AI, Replicate, Scaleway, Together, WaveSpeedAI and Z.ai, plus Hugging Face's own HF Inference, which now mostly serves CPU workloads like embeddings and classification. Chat traffic goes through an OpenAI compatible endpoint at router.huggingface.co/v1, and the Python and JavaScript clients add text-to-image, video, speech and embeddings. The router lists 132 chat models today, from GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3 to gpt-oss-120b on eleven providers.

Example models: GLM 5.3, Kimi K3, gpt-oss-120b

Boundless

Boundless launched in September 2026 as an inference partner for AI-native startups. It sells two things. The Model API serves pre-tuned models on shared capacity, billed per token from prepaid credits with a budget per API key. Tailored inference reserves capacity for one customer, and Boundless engineers pick the model on the customer’s own evals, tune precision, batching, caching, speculative decoding and parallelism, then run the deployment against uptime, throughput and latency targets written into the contract. A free two-week evaluation tests those targets on real traffic against the customer’s current provider first.

Example models: GLM-5.3, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, Kimi K3
