Modal vs TypeSafe AI: key differences

TypeSafe AI's Jev is a hosted decision model. A developer defines the answer space with Choice, Score or true-or-false primitives, and Jev returns a typed answer plus calibrated probabilities, usually in about 100ms and at a tiny fraction of an LLM call's cost. Every response stays inside the options the developer defined. Modal has no models. It gives Python developers GPUs on demand, scaling to zero and billing per second, so a team can run classifiers, embeddings or LLMs it packages itself.

A team could build its own classifier on Modal, but that means training, packaging and serving it, and paying for warm containers if 100ms responses matter. Jev skips that work for decision-shaped queries like ticket routing, lead scoring or jailbreak detection. Modal wins when the model is custom, when the output is text or media, or when a workflow needs fine-tuning and batch jobs. Jev is in early access with text-only input, and its programming model is new.

What Modal and TypeSafe AI do

Modal

Modal is serverless compute with GPUs attached. A developer decorates a Python function with the hardware it needs, such as gpu="H100", and Modal builds the container, schedules it, autoscales it and scales it back to zero. Billing runs per second with no minimum increment, from $0.59 an hour for a T4 to $3.95 for an H100 at list. Containers can hold up to 8 GPUs across T4 through B300.

Example models: none hosted by default; teams deploy their own, such as open LLMs on vLLM or Whisper

TypeSafe AI

TypeSafe AI builds decision models instead of text generators. Founder Diogo Almeida co-invented RLHF and InstructGPT at OpenAI and later worked at Google Brain. After two years in stealth the company released its first System One Model, Jev, in early access. The name nods to Kahneman's fast System 1 thinking, and the model is built for machines to call, not people to chat with.

Example models: Jev, jev-1.13
