Alibaba Cloud vs Inception: key differences

Qwen 3.8-Max takes text, image and video input with 1M context at $2 in and $6 out internationally and runs around 40 tokens per second. Model Studio adds batch at half price on eligible models, caching and EU deployment. Inception's Mercury 2.5 is a closed reasoning model with 260K context, tool use and JSON mode at $0.20 in and $0.75 out per million. Inception reports over 1,100 tokens per second, and Artificial Analysis measured about 640. Its quality sits with cost-optimized models like Claude Haiku 4.5, not the frontier.

Pick Alibaba Cloud for a stronger multimodal flagship, longer context and open Qwen weights to fall back on, especially for multilingual and Asia-market products. Pick Inception when response time drives the product, as in code edits, voice agents and real-time chat. Alibaba's price sheet is harder to read, while Inception offers only its own closed models.

What Alibaba Cloud and Inception do

Alibaba Cloud

Alibaba Cloud serves the Qwen model family through Model Studio, its managed AI platform. The flagship Qwen 3.8-Max takes text, image and video input with a 1M token context, function calling, structured outputs and built-in web search. International pricing is $2 in and $6 out per million tokens, with implicit cache hits at $0.25. Deployments in China and some global regions list lower, at $1.65 in and about $4.95 out, and Alibaba often runs limited-time discounts, including night-time cuts of up to 80% on Qwen 3.7-Max.

Inception

Inception builds diffusion large language models (dLLMs). Every other LLM on this list generates text one token at a time; Inception's Mercury models start from a rough draft of a whole block and refine it over a few passes, producing many tokens in parallel. That ties speed less to output length and lets the models run fast on ordinary NVIDIA GPUs rather than custom chips. The company was founded by professors from Stanford, UCLA and Cornell behind core work on diffusion, Flash Attention and DPO, and is led by Stanford's Stefano Ermon. It raised a $50M seed in November 2025 led by Menlo Ventures, with Mayfield, M12, NVentures, Snowflake and Databricks, plus Andrew Ng and Andrej Karpathy as angels.

Example models: Mercury 2.5, Mercury 2
