Google Vertex AI vs Z.ai: key differences
Z.ai's pitch is frontier-adjacent quality for very little money. GLM-5.3 costs $1.40 in and $4.40 out per million, GLM-5.3-Flash $0.075 in and $0.25 out, and several older Flash models are free. The GLM Coding Plan gives developers a prompt quota that resets every five hours and weekly for $18 a month, and an Anthropic-compatible endpoint lets Claude Code run on GLM with a few environment variables. Vertex AI plays a different game: Gemini 3.8, Claude and 200+ models inside Google Cloud, with training, pipelines and governance attached.
The risk profiles differ. Z.ai's servers sit mostly in China, which adds 100 to 200ms from the US or Europe and raises data concerns for enterprises. But because GLM weights are MIT licensed, a team can self-host or fine-tune them anywhere, with no license limits. Vertex costs more and is harder to forecast, yet keeps traffic inside a hyperscaler with deep BigQuery ties. Individual developers and small teams doing budget agentic coding will find Z.ai compelling. Enterprises on Google Cloud should treat Vertex as home base.
What Google Vertex AI and Z.ai do
Google Vertex AI
Vertex AI is Google Cloud's enterprise AI platform. At Google Cloud Next on April 22, 2026, Google rebranded it the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform with an agent-first structure, though the API endpoint and most docs still say Vertex. Model Garden offers 200+ models, including Google's Gemini 3.8 family, Anthropic's Claude models and open models like Gemma, alongside Imagen, Veo and Chirp for media and speech. Google's own TPUs sit underneath much of its first-party serving.
Example models: Gemini 3.8, Claude

Z.AI is the international brand of Chinese lab Zhipu AI, maker of the GLM models. Its current flagship, GLM-5.3, shipped August 17, 2026 at $1.40 in and $4.40 out per million tokens, with cached input at $0.26. GLM-5.3-Flash costs $0.075 in and $0.25 out, and several older Flash models are priced at zero, a real free tier instead of trial credits. GLM-5, released in February 2026, is a 744B mixture-of-experts model under an MIT license, and at launch it ranked first among open-weight models on the Artificial Analysis index with a record-low hallucination score.
Example models: GLM-5.3, GLM-5.3-Flash
