Hugging Face Inference Providers vs Inception: key differences

Hugging Face Inference Providers puts an OpenAI-compatible router in front of hosts like Groq, Cerebras, Fireworks and Together, bills at provider rates with no markup, and can pick the fastest or cheapest host per model. Inception sells Mercury models that refine whole blocks of text in parallel. Mercury 2.5 offers reasoning, tool use and 260K context at $0.20 in and $0.75 out. Inception reports 1,100+ tokens per second; Artificial Analysis measures about 640.

Hugging Face fits teams comparing open models and hosts, or consolidating spend under one bill. Inception fits latency-critical work like code edits and voice where its models are good enough.

What Hugging Face Inference Providers and Inception do

Hugging Face Inference Providers

Inference Providers is a router run by Hugging Face that sits in front of partner inference clouds. The current partner list covers Baseten, Cerebras, Cohere, DeepInfra, fal, Featherless AI, Fireworks, Groq, Novita, Nscale, OVHcloud, Public AI, Replicate, Scaleway, Together, WaveSpeedAI and Z.ai, plus Hugging Face's own HF Inference, which now mostly serves CPU workloads like embeddings and classification. Chat traffic goes through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at router.huggingface.co/v1, and the Python and JavaScript clients add text-to-image, video, speech and embeddings. The router lists 132 chat models today, from GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3 to gpt-oss-120b on eleven providers.

Example models: GLM 5.3, Kimi K3, gpt-oss-120b

Inception

Inception builds diffusion large language models (dLLMs). Every other LLM on this list generates text one token at a time; Inception's Mercury models start from a rough draft of a whole block and refine it over a few passes, producing many tokens in parallel. That ties speed less to output length and lets the models run fast on ordinary NVIDIA GPUs rather than custom chips. The company was founded by professors from Stanford, UCLA and Cornell behind core work on diffusion, Flash Attention and DPO, and is led by Stanford's Stefano Ermon. It raised a $50M seed in November 2025 led by Menlo Ventures, with Mayfield, M12, NVentures, Snowflake and Databricks, plus Andrew Ng and Andrej Karpathy as angels.

Example models: Mercury 2.5, Mercury 2
