Sail Research vs Inception: key differences

Sail serves open models like Kimi K2.6, GLM-5.3 and GPT-OSS 120B with completion windows priced against traditional providers: the default low-latency asap window at 30 to 70% less, balanced at 45 to 80% less, or off-peak flex at 55 to 85% less. Sailboxes give agents persistent compute. Inception's Mercury 2.5 is a closed reasoning model with tool use and 260K context at $0.20 in and $0.75 out. Inception reports over 1,100 tokens per second; Artificial Analysis measures about 640.

Sail fits background agents, evals and batch work that can wait, and its slower, cheaper windows do not suit voice or live chat. Inception fits exactly those latency-critical cases, though its quality trails larger open models on hard reasoning and long agent tasks. Teams with both kinds of traffic could split it between them.

What Sail Research and Inception do

Sail Research

Sail Research sells throughput over latency. Founders Neil Movva and Samir Menon built a serving stack that packs as much work as possible into every GPU, and customers state how long they can wait through completion windows. Its docs quote each window against traditional providers: the default asap window serves at low latency for 30 to 70% less, balanced for 45 to 80% less, and the off-peak flex window for 55 to 85% less. Batch requests default to flex, and LoRA and custom-tool requests default to balanced.

Example models: Kimi K2.6, GLM-5.3

Inception

Inception builds diffusion large language models (dLLMs). Every other LLM on this list generates text one token at a time; Inception's Mercury models start from a rough draft of a whole block and refine it over a few passes, producing many tokens in parallel. That ties speed less to output length and lets the models run fast on ordinary NVIDIA GPUs rather than custom chips. The company was founded by professors from Stanford, UCLA and Cornell behind core work on diffusion, Flash Attention and DPO, and is led by Stanford's Stefano Ermon. It raised a $50M seed in November 2025 led by Menlo Ventures, with Mayfield, M12, NVentures, Snowflake and Databricks, plus Andrew Ng and Andrej Karpathy as angels.

Example models: Mercury 2.5, Mercury 2

If your agents run past 200K tokens, compare both against Subconscious. Our inference stack treats a long-horizon trace as the primary workload, so speed, cost, and accuracy hold up deep into the trace.
